Lee Gregory
Baritone
Lee Gregory is a gifted singing actor with a beautiful, warm, and ringing baritone voice. He has a wide and varied repertoire, and is quickly becoming known for his ability to embody his characters. The Nashville Scene acclaimed his Mercutio as "performed with a resonant baritone that readily captured his character's arrogance and swagger," and Opera News praised his Mercutio as "... nearly ideal. He is tall and has a sizable voice that nimbly limned the Mab aria, justly applauded. His physicality captured Shakespeare's jokester quite well."
Mr. Gregory's 2007-08 season includes his debut with Opera Pacific as Schaunard in La bohème, and singing the role of Belcore in L'elisir d'amore with Opera Naples. He also appears in recital at Bates College with soprano Kelly Kaduce. In 2007 he returned to Boston Midsummer Opera to sing in an evening of staged arias and ensemble selections, entitled "Tales of Offenbach," and performed Marcello in La bohème with ProCantus Lyric Opera.
Recent highlights include his New York City Opera debut as Moralès in Carmen, Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette with Toledo Opera and Nashville Opera, Boston Midsummer Opera's production "The Marriages of Mozart", Mr. Marshall in Regina at Bard's SummerScape Festival, John Brooke in Little Women with Dayton Opera, and the title role in Don Giovanni and Melchoir in Amahl and the Night Visitors with the Opera Company of Brooklyn. Other recent performances include the roles of Maximillian in Candide and Ping in Turandot with Des Moines Metro Opera; The Clock and The Cat in L'enfant et les sortileges, and Peter in Hänsel und Gretel with Ridge Light Opera; Marcello in La bohème with American Opera and Treasure Coast Opera; Yamadori in Madama Butterfly with the New Jersey State Opera; Escamillo in Carmen with the Opera Company of Brooklyn; and the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance with the Trinity Repertory Company. As a regular performer with American Opera projects, Lee Gregory has collaborated with new playwrights and composers, performing their works in progress. An avid recitalist, Mr. Gregory made his Boston debut performing a recital with the Hammond Concert Series. He also added to his many musical theater credits with a gala concert celebrating Richard Rodgers' centenary in a concert with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.
The winner of the 2006 Joy in Singing Competition, Lee Gregory recently made his Merkin Hall recital debut and has performed in recital scheduled throughout the 2006-07 season. A winner of the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation Competition, Mr. Gregory has participated in a number of prestigious training programs including San Francisco Opera's Merola Opera Program and the Western Opera Theater Tour, Aspen Music Festival, Cincinnati Opera's Apprentice Artist Program, and the Des Moines Metro Opera Tour.
